Our story

April 11, 2016
Champion Iron, through its subsidiary Quebec Iron Ore, acquires the Bloom Lake mine and related rail assets thanks to the confidence of its various partners, including the Quebec government.
February 16, 2017
Announcement of the results of a feasibility study to recommission the Bloom Lake site. This study shows that reviving the mine is financially viable and that it would be competitive in global iron ore markets.

Quebec Iron Ore reaches an agreement with the communities of Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam and Matimekush-Lac John on the impacts and benefits (IBA) of future mine activities. Thanks to this agreement, every tonne of ore that leaves the Bloom Lake site is subject to a royalty fee.

Despite the pandemic, construction of Phase II continues at Bloom Lake. The project, which represents a total investment of US$1.6 billion and is one of the largest industrial projects in North America, draws on the expertise of several North Shore suppliers.

This additional energy capacity will enable us to bring the DRPF project to fruition and pursue our plan to achieve carbon neutrality at the mine site.

The Government of Canada announces that it will add high-purity iron to its list of critical minerals. This decision aligns with Quebec (January 2024) and Newfoundland and Labrador (November 2023), which have also included high-purity iron ore on their respective lists and recognize its strategic role in significantly decarbonizing the steel industry.
