Our story
April 11, 2016
Champion Iron, through its subsidiary Quebec Iron Ore, acquires the Bloom Lake mine and related rail assets thanks to the confidence of its various partners, including the Quebec government.
February 16, 2017
Announcement of the results of a feasibility study to recommission the Bloom Lake site. This study shows that reviving the mine is financially viable and that it would be competitive in global iron ore markets.
April 12, 2017
Quebec Iron Ore reaches an agreement with the communities of Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam and Matimekush-Lac John on the impacts and benefits (IBA) of future mine activities. Thanks to this agreement, every tonne of ore that leaves the Bloom Lake site is subject to a royalty fee.
February 16, 2018
Production of high-purity iron concentrate officially resumes at the Bloom Lake site.
March 25, 2018
Quebec Iron Ore completes its first cargo load on the Magnus Oldendorff at the brand-new multi-user wharf in Sept-Îles.
June 20, 2019
Announcement of the feasibility study results for the Phase II expansion of the mine site, which will increase total production from 7.4 to 15 million tonnes of high-purity iron concentrate per year.
2020-2021
Despite the pandemic, construction of Phase II continues at Bloom Lake. The project, which represents a total investment of US$1.6 billion and is one of the largest industrial projects in North America, draws on the expertise of several North Shore suppliers.

Quebec Iron Ore announces that the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) will henceforth be a holiday to enable all employees to contemplate this symbolic and important day.
April 2022
Thanks to the dedication of its employees and the support of collaborators, Quebec Iron Ore produces its first tonnes of iron ore from Plant II.
May 20, 2022
An event is organized at the mine site to mark the commissioning of Plant II and celebrate this important milestone with employees and partners. For the occasion, 12 Indigenous artists share a stage in the bed of a 240-tonne truck to perform in Innu-aimun.

For the first time in Fermont and Montreal, activities are planned for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, enabling employees not only to reflect, but also to learn more about Innu history and culture.

Announcement of the feasibility study results to evaluate the further processing of Bloom Lake iron ore concentrate into direct reduction pellet feed (DRPF), a high-quality raw material needed to conduct a less emissive steelmaking process.

• Drill results confirm the Bloom Lake mine’s continuity and expansion potential beyond the current mine plan
• Measured and indicated resources increase by 40%
• Assumed resources increase by 360%

The Quebec government confirms the allocation of a rare additional hydropower block to Quebec Iron Ore—recognition of the relevance of our efforts to decarbonize the economy and accelerate the energy transition. This additional energy capacity will enable us to bring the DRPF project to fruition and pursue our plan to achieve carbon neutrality at the mine site.

Final investment decision to launch the DRPF project. Designed to be carbon neutral, this $470 million project will enable us to produce one of the purest iron concentrates in the world and help make Quebec a leader in the development of the green steel industry.
June 10, 2024
The Government of Canada announces that it will add high-purity iron to its list of critical minerals. This decision aligns with Quebec (January 2024) and Newfoundland and Labrador (November 2023), which have also included high-purity iron ore on their respective lists and recognize its strategic role in significantly decarbonizing the steel industry.
